Produced from maize germs, corn oil is primarily used as a cooking oil, partly due to its high smoke point which makes it an ideal frying agent. Corn oil is also a vital ingredient in some margarines. In recent years, its declining cost has also made it more viable as a feedstock for biodiesel production. Other industrial uses include the manufacturing of soap, paints, erasers, inks, textiles and rustproofing agents.

Consumption of corn oil in non-food sectors accounts for only a small percentage of overall consumption. Some industrial corn processing co-products, such as corn germ and dried distillers grains with solubles, have potential for this application after the extraction of corn distillers oil.
